Many times I have esteemed the iPhone’s ample surface area when it comes to integrating a solar charging method. But it seems I have been one up-ed with the ReNu Solar Charger. With its detachable solar panel, this eco-friendly gadget adds a new dimension of accessibility and functionality, freeing environmentally conscious consumers from the often contrived means of placing your life line (i.e. cell phone/media player) in direct sunlight for extended periods. No longer will you have to precariously leave your iPhone perched on a window sill and ...

Earlier this year the ever-growing Google Inc announced that they were expanding into energy conservation. How? Through online consumption monitoring, of course. The PowerMeter is designed to provide detailed information on daily power use and it follows from the eco school of thought where the more you know, the more you can conserve. Similar projects, like the Tweet-a-Watt, which Twitters your energy usage for your own personal glory/infamy, follow from this philosophy. Since its announcement back in February, Google has been quietly testing the software in-house with their employees/guinea ...

To some, the very idea that reading Energy Conservation for Dummies can consume hydro is appalling. After all, e-book readers take what is essentially one of the last vestiges of a bygone age and digitize it, taking the last refuge for Luddites and transforming into a pixelated page-turner that runs on batteries. It’s a logical progression for the medium, one that is currently reliant on new and recycled paper and CO2-spewing delivery trucks. A digital delivery system cuts out the harmful manufacturing process and impactful deliveries but it still ...

You know when the Environmental Protection Agency is handing out awards to cell phone manufacturers that the green movement is finally getting some serious traction in consumer electronics. Motorola announced yesterday that the EPA has handed out their coveted Green Power Leadership award for 2009. The Kudos is due, in no small part, to Motorola’s Renew [pictured above]. A cell phone made nearly entirely from recycled plastic bottles.

Carbon-neutral is the name of the game when it comes to the Renew and so Motorola enlisted recycled plastic bottles for the phone’s body and shipped the device ...

It might not be the catchiest name, but the Reclaim from Samsung has its heart in the right place. This eco-oriented phone weds environmental awareness with a surprisingly successful design. Rest assured, this isn’t a buzzword cash-in. Plus, fit its $50 price tag with a 2-year contract from Sprint, you won’t just be saving the environment, but your wallet as well.

Let’s get to the green stuff first. The Reclaim is made from bio- and recycled plastic, combing the corn-based eco-plastic with those copious reserves of the resilient material. What’s more, ...

The history of mankind can be defined in many ways. Most recently the most obvious trait that has defined our exploits is the quest for fuel. Whether it’s for power plants or automobiles, massive amounts of time and money is spent researching, exploring, and extracting new fuels. And while governments prepare to harvest off world, some are looking in other, unorthodox places as well. Like the garden. Known more for its place at the picnic table, red fruit called watermelon has the potential to make a (delicious) impact on the renewable energy front.

The titular ...

You already knew that riding a bike was a great way to save the environment and your wallet but this week two new chargers were unveiled that will make your bike even more environmentally friendly and even more useful. Both the BioLogic FreeCharge [pictured above] and the E-Werk charger provide charging options for a whole host of portable electronics.

By tapping into any commercial dyno hub you’ve already installed, these gadget chargers are able to utilize those spurts of energy to replenish your diminished battery reserves. The BioLogic FreeCharge by ...

Generating juice on the go or getting your goods off the grid, portable eco-friendly chargers and energy-saving household gadgets are not only convenient but cost effective too. Take the SideWinder hand crank, for example. This 2.5 oz ultraportable gadget charger provides 5-6 minutes of talk-time (or 30 minutes standby) for just two minutes of cranking. The $30 price tag is made even more palatable with the addition ...

Solar-heated Showers, Green Degrees, and Multi-tasking your iPod into a storage drive/mp3 exporting machine!

Green Fun in the Sun

You have to admit, it’s not all that off that ‘green’ and ‘sexy’ appear in the same sentence but Herrington’s Solar-Power Shower promo pic certainly conjures those words to mind. Though, given the appeal is supposedly a shower that heats the water their chosen subject certainly doesn’t look like one who needs warming up. In fact, chances are, ...

During the last few Greener Gadgets competitions eco-gadget geeks have been privy to some pretty outlandish concepts and whole-hearted but half-baked ideas. From manual printers running on coffee grounds to a wallet that represents your biggest eco-vice the annual green gadget awards gets some pretty outlandish ideas. And so the notion of a USB drive made out of cardboard would seem to fit right in with other such noble but impractical concepts. Except this isn’t a concept, it’s an actual, factual product being produced.

Going ...
