HTC S740 Delivers the QWERTY and the Stealthy

HTC stays off the touchscreen bandwagon with their S740, but delivers the widescreen goodness. However, the widescreen is somewhat wasted as the S740 concentrates on Internet connectivity and not any sort of multimedia experience (at least not anything obvious). Actually, it doesn’t even concentrate on connectivity that much since the S740′s official product page at HTC.com doesn’t mention anything about Flash or Java. Not mentioning that your device can or cannot handle Flash and/or Java can get you into trouble as Apple learned when one of their ads got pulled in the UK as blogged by Engadget. However, the S740 does come with Windows MobileĀ® 6.1 Standard onboard, so you might want to blame Microsoft for any short comings. Or not.So, what, if anything, makes the HTC S740 worth looking at?Well, that hits the nail right on the head–look at it.While not as elegant in the same way as Apple’s iPhone, the S740 is pretty easy on the eyes. As NewMobile.com‘s hands-on with the S740 noted, the back of the device features the same Stealth-fighter-esque design as HTC’s Diamond. Nice to look at and to touch. Though, like the iPhone, you’ll want to watch out for smudges. The S740′s display is a somewhat diminutive 2.4 inches, which is more than an inch smaller than the display on Apples 3G iPhone. However, die hard fans of tactile keyboards will enjoy the slide-out qwerty the S740 features, and of course, the tactile keypad, as well. Nothing like actually feeling the buttons you are pressing, right? The only real concern here is the width of the device. Just looking at the thing, you have to wonder if that 2.4 inch screen is a really small 2.4 inches or the phone is really tall or wide (depending on how you hold it). One thing it definitely does better than the iPhone is take pictures. The S740 comes with a 3.2 megapixel camera for “for quality stills and video” but the website mentions nothing about what kind of video the device will record–in fact, their specs page mentions nothing about video at all, so don’t bet that this phone can do the moving-picture thing until more is known about this guy.No word on price or availability as the S740′s existence was only recently announced.
