Teaching your PC to sleep-talk
Many a digital denizen will leave his or
her PC on overnight for various reasons; updates, downloads, warmth, to name
just a few. But it’s also a downright wasteful. It’s a constant power drain,
like the vampiric cell phone chargers on steroids. For some, the sleep and
hibernate modes are a nice halfway point between start-up time and energy usage
and yet you have to sacrifice network connectivity. Until now. The ridiculously
named Somniloquy. Thus USB device allows instant message, web downloads, and
file sharing to all function in power-saving modes.
101Mbps Internet
Let’s face it: the internet just isn’t fast
enough. Torrents take hours to
download rather than minutes. Streaming shows are only in standard definition,
not high. So, what are we going to do about this conundrum? Return to our old devices? Never! Starting next month,
for a paltry $100/month Cablevision will provide you with 101 megabits per second for all your nefarious
altruistic needs. The service also offers 15Mbps upstream and it’s all thanks
to DOCSIS 3.0 technology. However, there’s always a caveat and here it is;
Cablevision simply provides the suburban New York area with
internet. Soon, the rest of North America, soon…
Apple Tablet and iPhone Lite En Route?
BusinessWeek is reporting from two sources
that Verizon might be getting an iPhone Lite and a touchscreen Apple tablet,
perhaps as early as this summer. The only strong assurance in the report,
however, is that the new devices will not interfere with AT&T’s exclusivity
over the ‘original’ iPhone.
And the caveats continue. The report spends
a considerable chunk tapering expectations by detailing how the deal may
actually fall through:
“It’s possible both sides may disagree over
financial terms, such as how big a subsidy Verizon Wireless might pay for each
device or whether to share monthly service revenue with Apple. Another deal
breaker could be disagreements over distribution of wireless software
applications. Apple is the exclusive provider and distributor of apps for the
AT&T iPhone. If Apple requests a similar deal on newer devices, Verizon
Wireless may balk.”
