What carries your memories, recalls where they happened and
won Good Housekeeping’s Very Innovative Product Award?! Well, thanks to the
modern invention of titles you already know the answer to be the Eye-Fi
Explorer. This nifty little card can do it all and makes an excellent addition
to the camera bag of any roving urban explorer.
Well there are cameras that provide decent geotagging, they
range drastically in price (such as the $1,200 Ricoh 500SE). And then there are
those devices that have quasi-GPS geotagging (such as GE E1050, $200, which
quite ingeniously makes use of only a GPS radio, saving on battery power and
leaving the bulk of the tagging labour up to their post-picture processing
software called Geotate). But by and large, I think it’s safe to say that camera enthusiasts likely already own their
dream camera (thanks to the DSLR boom). Enter the Eye-Fi Explorer.
This card has an integrated Wi-Fi chipset which allows for
the simple procedure of painlessly uploading pictures to your home computer
sans cables. But the built-in Wi-Fi also adds rudimentary geotagging
functionality a la iPhone v1.0. That is to say, by triangulating the users
location via nearby Wi-Fi hotspots, the Eye-Fi Explorer is capable of
determining your relative location when a photo is taken.
Now before you say it, I know what you’re thinking; there ain’t
too many internet cafes in the Amazonian jungle. Using the Eye-Fi Explorer ensures
that if you want to geotag your pictures you’re essentially tethered to urban
environments, preferably popular ones. And you won’t be getting the accuracy of
a dedicated GPS device embedded in your camera, meaning tagging can be off by
as much as several hundred yards.
Still, at the minimal cost of $100 you get 2GB of storage,
wireless image transfers with your PC and geotagging for pubcrawls. What’s more, it flawlessly integrates with
your current camera, so whether you’re a professional or an amateur, compatibility
isn’t an issue.

Damn… and i was just going to buy one for my trip down the Amazon in a canoe.. Guess i’ll have to pass…. nifty gadget though..
I think this is an excellent idea, it is a bit expensive but I could be tempted to buy it
